The course has been designed to be completed in a 3 to 6-month timeframe, commencing whenever it suits you. The hours of study are flexible and you can fit it in around your other commitments.

The online component of the course includes access to an extensive range of learning resources including interactive presentations, videos and reference materials. You can contact our student support team as often as you like if you require assistance.

Throughout your course you complete practical work in a fitness centre or PT facility to gain experience, perfect your skills and link with employers.

The course is assessed via the practical placement, written short answers and online quizzes.

There are no minimum timeframes which means you can work through it as quickly as you like. You have up to 12 months to complete the Certificate if needed.

Assessment

There are 8 study areas in the Certificate as follows:

  1. Introduction to Personal Training
  2. Anatomy & Physiology
  3. Client Screening and Assessment
  4. Advanced Nutrition
  5. Exercise Programming
  6. Work Experience Practical Placement
  7. Advanced Exercise Methods
  8. Programming For High Risk Clients

At the end of each topic you are required to complete a short online quiz. The aim of the quiz is to assess your understanding of the topic before progressing to the next. Each quiz consists of multiple choice questions and needs to be completed within a set timeframe. A score of 90% or more is required to pass. If you do not pass the quiz on your first attempt, you will be directed back to specific areas of the topic to revise your knowledge. You will be provided with an opportunity to reattempt the quiz 48 hours later.

Within several topics, there is also the requirement to complete case studies, which aim to assess your ability to design appropriate exercise programs for a range of clients with a variety of fitness goals and needs.

Towards the end of your course, you are also required to complete 25 hours of practical placement in an approved fitness centre or personal training studio under the supervision of an experienced, practicing personal trainer. The practical placement is used to develop your instructional skills, ability to identify and correct exercise technique and provide customer service to clients. A performance evaluation from your supervisor forms a component of your practical placement assessment.

Only upon completing all of the quizzes, case studies and practical placement will you be issued the qualification.

There is also a requirement to complete a First Aid qualification as part of the Certified Personal Trainer course. The First Aid course will need to include theoretical and practical demonstration of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

It’s also recommended that you check whether your country has registration, accreditation and insurance requirements for personal trainers. These additional requirements may be needed prior to you commencing work as a personal trainer.
